Hot Spring Wells

The Kanniya Hot Water Springs in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, hold a fascinating connection to the Ramayana, tied to the story of King Ravana and his profound grief over his mother’s passing.

According to Sri Lankan folklore, Ravana wished to perform last rites for his mother’s soul but struggled to find fresh water in the area. Overcome with sorrow, he struck the ground with his sword, causing hot water springs to emerge, enabling him to perform the sacred rituals.

These seven springs, each with varying temperatures, are believed to symbolize Ravana’s sorrow and immense devotion to his mother. Today, the Kanniya Hot Water Springs are revered as a sacred site, drawing both Hindus and Buddhists who honor its spiritual and cultural significance.
